For skin cancers that do not require Mohs Micrographic Surgery, standard skin cancer excision is able to be performed.
Under local anesthesia, a scalpel is used to remove the entire tumor along with a “safety margin” of normal tissue, the size of the margin depends on the thickness and location of the tumor. After removal the tissue is sent to be analyzed by a dermapathologist.
The hole that remains after the excision is then closed with reconstructive surgery. We receive test results in approximately five business days, indicating if the skin cancer has been completely removed. If so, no further surgery will be necessary. If the skin cancer remains, additional surgery will be performed to completely remove the remaining skin cancer.
There are times when excisions are required for non-cancerous lesions also.
